Event Description
World Fair Trade Day is an initiative of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) that takes place on the second Saturday of May each year. It is an inclusive worldwide festival of events celebrating Fair Trade as a tangible contribution to sustainable development, especially the economic empowerment of small producers, gender equality in workplaces and responsible production practices.
What’s Happening at Harvest Market?
Harvest Market welcomes back our friend Laura of the Tin Lizzy Mobile Boutique, a roving purveyor of delightful, contemporary fair trade fashion pieces and accessories, in our parking lot from 11am-5pm. We are also excited to have Laurie from Equal Exchange in the store from 11am-2pm to talk about the importance of Fair Trade, sample their delicious chocolates and raffle off an incredible basket of Fair Trade goodies. We will have Turk’s Head Mexican Chiapas Fair Trade Organic cold brew coffee and tea samples for customers to enjoy as they shop.
What is Fair Trade?
According to the World Fair Trade Organization: “Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South. Fair Trade organisations have a clear commitment to Fair Trade as the principal core of their mission. They, backed by consumers, are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.”
Simply put, Fair Trade assures a good deal for farmers, their families and communities, while also making sure the environment is respected.
