For Dave Killer’s Bread, it goes beyond baking the best bread in the Universe — it’s about believing everyone is capable of greatness, creating lasting change in our communities and so much more. Dave’s Killer Bread is built on the Dahl family legacy – a rich history of bold baking methods, strong family values, and seeing the good in people. The history of Dave’s Killer Bread began in 2005, when co-founder Dave Dahl was welcomed back to the family bakery by his older brother Glenn after serving 15 years in prison. Dave seized the opportunity and worked tirelessly to develop a killer new recipe for organic and Non-GMO bread, which was debuted at the Portland Farmers Market in 2005. Dave’s Killer Bread was an instant hit.
What began as one man’s journey has turned into so much more. Today, Dave’s Killer Bread is the #1 organic bread in America, with distribution in all 50 states as well as Canada. Additionally, approximately 1 in 3 of the more than 300 employee-partners at the company’s Milwaukie, Oregon bakery has a criminal background. These individuals demonstrate the commitment, the passion and the power to learn and grow, becoming some of the company’s most valued and trusted workers, filling positions from entry level jobs to management positions responsible for hundreds of employees and critical bakery operations.

The people at Dave’s Killer Bread believe everyone is capable of greatness. They believe in the power of reinvention, and are committed to turning second chances into lasting change.
One in three of Dave’s Killer Bread employee partners has a criminal background. They believe everyone is capable of greatness and that a second chance can lead to positive lasting change. In 2015, they created a non-profit, the Dave’s Killer Bread Foundation, with the mission to inspire other businesses to become Second Chance Employers and affect positive societal change. The Foundation believes that in the long term, Second Chance employment has the power to reduce the negative impact of mass incarceration and recidivism in America. In this belief, they provide programs for businesses looking to adopt or improve these practices.
Do you believe in second chances? We encourage you to take the Stand Behind Second Chances Pledge. Your support will help change perceptions and inspire others to become second chance employers.
From their employees, to their communities to our environment – Dave’s Killer Bread continually strives to make a difference and effect positive change. Each year, they donate enough bread to food banks and non-profits to make 3,000,000 sandwiches! (Request a donation here for your organization.) Employee partners are encouraged to find volunteer opportunities that suit their own interests and providing rewarding experiences. They have monthly volunteer opportunities for employee partners and their families. Dave’s Killer Bread fosters sustainable agricultural practices and organic farming through seed tests, apprentice programs and farm sponsorships.
